March is known as Mud Season around these parts. It’s a time when the snow and ice of winter melts, our ground begins to thaw, making our rich farmland and horse farms wet and muddy. And while that doesn’t seem, on the surface, like a great time to visit us…we have plenty of activities and reasons to take advantage of the off-season and plan a quiet getaway.
If you are a foodie, a history buff, or a weekend-shopper, some of the best activities in the area are actually indoors, and early Spring is the perfect time to do it; before the throngs of visitors start their weekend trekking.

FDR ESTATE & LIBRARY – ANNUAL BOOK FESTIVAL
VARIOUS DATES THROUGH MARCH AND APRIL
It may be muddy outside…but that makes it the perfect time to meander INSIDE… at the FDR Presidential Library. If you are a history buff, you will love seeing his family mansion, the interactive library documenting the nation’s history during his time in office, and if you are a book-lover, you’ll love what they have lined up for March and April: the annual Hudson Valley Book Festival, where they feature different authors for a question and answer session, followed by a book signing!
Famous authors are always featured; to see which ones are on this year, visit the events web page here. The event is free, but you have to register to reserve a seat.
MAPLE WEEKENDS AT SOUKUP FARMS
WEEKENDS OF MARCH 22nd AND MARCH 29th
The last two weekends every March, our neighbors at Soukup Farms, open up their maple groves to visitors to watch the annual process of removing the sap from their tree farm and turning into yummy products including syrup, maple cream, and even maple cotton candy, which they call “snow”.
Their farm store serves a hearty maple-focused breakfast and they have lots of activities all weekend to celebrate the maple harvest.
A PEEK INN-SIDE APRIL: EASTER AT THE MILLBROOK INN
Our inn, with its beautiful patio and cheerful glass conservatory, is a favorite spot for diners on Easter Sunday. And for our menu, Easter Sunday is the gift that keeps on giving: whether is pork, lamb, or fish, our hyper-local purveyors and hot-house farmers have the best of what an Easter Feast can offer. Back by popular demand this Easter: our luscious carrot cake, topped with cream cheese frosting, pumpkins seeds, coffee cake crumble, and candied carrot peels.
If you happen to have no Easter plans, we can provide the perfect excuse for a Spring getaway..and we’ll be offering a special Sunday one-night stay so you can make the drive up just to enjoy it!
