The saying “country charm reimagined,” painted on a wooden bench on the porch of The Millbrook Inn, perfectly describes the vibe of this nine-room boutique B&B. New ownership has renovated, expanded, and designed the space with pastoral appeal. William Morris wallpaper, playful prints, vintage furniture, and delicious dining offer an elevated experience.

My favorite feature in this summer issue is “Hotels for Foodies” on page 24. If you’re like me, and never book a hotel or inn without making sure the accomodations and on-site restaurant are equally excellent, you’ll love this round-up of local getaways. I’m still dreaming about my delicious steelhead salmon trout entrée at The Millbrook Inn. Our six picks also boast lovely bars with talented mixologists who—like the restaurant chefs—make the most of the season’s bounty.

At The Vintage, the restaurant located at The Millbrook Inn in Hudson Valley, the King’s Punch is made with whiskey, freshly brewed chamomile tea, honey, and elderflower liqueur, served in a short tumbler over ice. Whiskey is one of King Charles’ favorite drinks and with the addition of another English favorite, tea, it is perfect for the coronation. The cocktail is finished with elderflower liqueur, which is a nod to King Charles’ son, Prince Harry as the flavor was used in his wedding cake. “I was inspired to create King’s Punch by ingredients that are favorites of King Charles and the British people (whisky and freshly brewed tea) and that also stay true to The Millbrook Inn’s farm-to-table philosophy of serving local. As King Charles is a long-term environmentalist, this influenced my use of honey within King’s Punch; did you know that Queen Elizabeth’s bees were told about her death as well as King Charles’ ascension? This is the perfect drink to enjoy while sitting in front of the television watching the coronation and then later that day while watching the Kentucky Derby,” said bartender Deb Colurciello.

“The bread must be crusty, buttered, and grilled, that is my first rule. Second, my favorite grilled cheese utilizes a combination of cheeses. I like something gooey that stays soft once melted, and also something stronger in flavor…so it continues to stay soft as the sandwich cools. Lastly, the salty quality of the cheese MUST be combined with something sweet inside the bread: either an Indian chutney, or our green tomato chutney we make here at the restaurant in the late summer. And then a piece of pork belly never hurts.” – Zac Olson, executive chef at the Vintage at Millbrook Inn in Millbrook, New York

“My favorite unappreciated cocktail is the Sidecar,” says Bartender Deb Colurciello, of The Millbrook Inn in NY. “I love it because it doesn’t try so hard to be a fancy cocktail; it’s just great brandy or cognac, orange liqueur and fresh lemon juice with a touch of sugar on the rim of the glass. Its beauty is its simplicity. It’s not loaded down with fruit, vegetables, smoke or any gimmicks that mixologists use to wow people—and there isn’t a wrong time to enjoy it.”

He started with a 30-mile sourcing radius, but that quickly shrank as neighboring meat and produce farmers began knocking on the kitchen door. “I am shocked at the abundance of stuff farmers have been bringing me,” Olson says. “We’ve honed in to a 10- to 15-mile radius for 75 percent of our goods.”

How about this combo: carrot juice, orange juice, tequila and cardamom syrup! It’s called the #7 because room seven is rabbit themed!

They speak to the golden age of the grand American Colonial home, but provide all of the modern conveniences of the 21st century. Each of our well-appointed rooms feature Matouk linens, pillow-top mattresses, and bathrooms with marble floors and glass-enclosed showers or shower/tub combinations.

The Location

Our bed and breakfast provides a serene retreat in the heart of the Hudson Valley. We are surrounded by lush farms and reclaimed green space featuring planted meadows of flowers, walking paths, an herb and vegetable garden, and an outdoor fire garden. We’re just two hours from New York City, and three hours from both Boston and Philadelphia. We are surrounded by delightful wineries and distilleries, along with unique attractions like gardens, galleries, historical sites, and sporting activities.

The Restaurant

We serve elevated, but not fussy, American cuisine, supporting local farmers and purveyors of every kind. In the evening, our elegant bar welcomes guests with a wood-burning fireplace, delicious food, award-winning wines, and local spirits. Just like our kitchen, we insist our bar is stocked with local products and showcases the best spirits produced right here in the Hudson Valley and New York state.
